A schoolwide effort
From April 27 to May 1, AVHS’s TUPE (Tobacco Use Prevention Education) program raised awareness about the importance of living a drug-free life in celebration of Red Ribbon Week. This campaign is known nationwide for encouraging students to make positive choices and understand the long-term impact of their decisions involving drug usage.
“Red Ribbon Week symbolizes drug awareness. It encourages communities to pledge to live drug-free and promotes healthy lifestyles, which is very much needed in today’s world,’’ said Aarya Godse (’28).
Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities. These include different games and a pledge that emphasizes the importance of making responsible decisions. The focus is on helping students better understand how their choices can affect both their present and future.
“Our school is doing many lunchtime activities like drunk goggles, spin the wheel, and other games to encourage students to learn more about Red Ribbon Week and be aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. We are also doing a pledge wall where students can pledge to stay drug-free and live a healthy life!’’ said Godse (’28).
Why it matters
Red Ribbon Week remains significant as it encourages students to stay focused on their goals and prioritize their health. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of resisting peer pressure. Participating in these activities gives students the opportunity to reflect on their values and the kind of future they want to build.
“I think students today relate to the message of Red Ribbon Week more than ever because we are increasingly facing the problem of tobacco addiction, which makes it much more necessary for us to educate about its dangers, and also provide outlets for students who are facing addiction to get help,’’ said Anupraya Sathiyanarayanan (’28).
The focus remained on encouraging students to stay informed and involved. Through continued awareness and participation, Red Ribbon Week supports a safer, healthier environment for everyone on campus.
Interestingly enough, Red Ribbon Week is traditionally held in October, whereas Amador celebrated it in April. TUPE was busy in October, which is why they chose to celebrate the event so late. Regardless, this actually made their initiative to prevent tobacco use more personal to AVHS.
‘’Our overall goal, not just with this week, is to decrease tobacco usage at our school by raising awareness,’’ said Sathiyanarayanan (‘28).
