As summer approaches, many students begin searching for ways to stay productive while also earning money. One opportunity offered at school is the custodial job over the summer, where students take on the responsibility of helping maintain the campus during the long break. This job not only provides income, but also gives students a sense of structure and responsibility outside of the classroom.
Daily responsibilities
The custodial job involves a variety of tasks that keep the school clean and organized. Students are typically responsible for cleaning classrooms, wiping down desks, sweeping and mopping floors, and maintaining the campus and common areas. In some cases, they may also help move furniture, organize supplies, or prepare rooms for the upcoming school year. The work is usually straightforward but requires consistency and attention to detail.
‘’We went from classroom to classroom the biggest thing we probably did was moving desks but we also did basic cleaning like just wiping down all the surfaces,’’ said Nico Baylos (’27).
Pay and Skill Development
One of the main benefits of the custodial job is the opportunity to earn consistent pay. For many students, this is their first job making it an important step toward financial independence. In addition to earning money, students also gain valuable skills such as responsibility, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. These are all qualities that can be useful in future jobs and other areas of life.
‘’ I feel like this experience would definitely help me in the future because it could also be used in other aspects and other jobs,’’ said Ethan Liang (’27).
Reflection and Advice
Overall, the custodial job program is seen as a positive experience for students who are willing to put in the effort. It provides a productive way to spend the summer while also getting to learn important life skills. Many students would recommend the job to others, especially those who are looking for a structured and reliable opportunity to participate in.
‘’I didn’t expect actually how fun it’d be, I got to meet a lot of people and the work was actually pretty fun,’’ said Baylos
The custodial job program offers more than just a paycheck. It allows students to contribute to their school community while developing healthy habits and skills that will benefit them in the future. For those looking to make the most of their summer it’s an opportunity worth considering.
‘’The environment was great especially with co-workers like Nico and Ethan and it was good money so I would definitely recommend it to others,’’ said Ulisses Aalmazan (’27).
