On Tuesday, Jan. 13 the BikeMobile service came to Amador to provide free repairs on student’s bikes. They welcomed students and families who wanted to learn more about bike safety and maintenance. This mobile repair service visits schools, libraries, recreation centers and many other places all around the Bay Area.
“I’d say more people, [specifically] young folks, need to learn how to work on their bicycles or just better understand them besides just putting air in to their tires,” said BikeMobile mechanic Patrick Smith.
BikeMobile is a mobile bicycle repair service that helps fix common bike problems like flat tires, loose chains, and broken brakes. Their goal is to make biking safer and more accessible for students and families who rely on their bikes.
“This is all about safety, We want to make sure bikes are running properly so students feel comfortable riding to school,” said Smith.
Making Repairs
During the event, mechanics inspect bikes, adjust brakes and gears, and replace worn-out parts such as chains, seats, and tires. While they can’t replace missing wheels or gears, they explain how riders can keep their bikes in good condition.
“A lot of times it’s small things that cause big problems. Once those are fixed, the bike feels completely different,” said Smith.
A Helpful Student Resource
Many students at Amador rely on their bikes as their main source of transportation. Students who had their bikes repaired said the experience made a big difference.
“It makes it easier for me to keep riding my bike without worrying about something going wrong. Now it feels safer, and I’m more comfortable riding to school,” Hernandez (’28).
The event was open to everyone, even those without bikes, and included lessons on bike safety and maintenance. Space was limited to twenty repairs. Students attended on a first-come, first-served basis.
“My brakes were broken before, and now they work perfectly. BikeMobile really helped me out,” said Arthur Bolotov (’28).
