Self-proclaimed as the “Crown Jewel of Oakland,” the Oakland Rotunda blends historic charm with modern amenities and will serve as this year’s prom venue for Amador. With its soaring glass atrium and sweeping staircases, the venue was chosen as the perfect City of Stars for the junior prom theme: La La Land.
“It just has these historic and nostalgic columns, marble floors and fixtures that newer buildings don’t really have. It also has this old school charm that makes events like prom timeless,” said Senior Property Manager Myles Roebuck.
Rooted in History
The Oakland Rotunda with its distinct Beaux-Arts style was constructed in 1912 as the headquarters of the Central Bank. The actual Rotunda itself, with its iconic dome, is the older of two buildings constructed. It served originally as a department store known as Kahn’s. However, after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, major damage was inflicted on the historic building and sat vacant until its eventual renovation.
“They closed down the building after some extensive damage from the Loma Prieta earthquake where it was rag-tagged and sat vacant until the former owners purchased it from the city with the intent to refresh it entirely,” said Roebuck.
After a three year renovation at a cost of $50 million dollars, the building reopened to its former glory. Today, the Oakland Rotunda is known for hosting special events and businesses.
“We have so many notable events hosted [at the Oakland Rotunda] that I don’t believe there is just one. I believe Governor Jerry Brown from way back was married here when it first opened. I also know that Bill Clinton came through for his campaign events in 2001. So this is definitely a more dignified space,” said Roebuck.
From Vision to Venue
In advance to the announcement of the theme, Leadership incorporated feedback of past prom dances to secure the best venue. Known for its iconic dome, the Oakland Rotunda integrated all the necessary elements of glamor and elegance.
“For City of Stars, because it’s all about sort of the glamour of Hollywood, one of the features of the Oakland Rotunda is it has this ornate windowed dome at the top. So when you’re on the dance floor with your friends, you can look up and see these beautiful lights in this gorgeous dome all lit up,” said Leadership Teacher Hannah Davies.
Beyond its visual appeal, students who helped choose the venue also emphasized how the layout enhances the overall experience. It allows for more than just dancing, offering distinct spaces for dining, photos, and more.
“The venue has such unique rooms. I feel like it’s good to have a venue where there isn’t just a dance floor, but there are areas for eating, hanging out. We have different things to do,” said Junior Class Treasurer Courtney Widiartio.
With more than a century of history, the Oakland Rotunda has evolved while preserving its charm. The blend of old and new makes it a fitting venue for a La La Land inspired prom.
“We’re just alive and our events in the evening keep us moving from dawn till dusk. Just take a look around the venue when you’re there. Some of the things I can’t explain, you just have to see for yourself,” said Roebuck.
