A Meet That Honors History
The track at Amador Valley buzzed with energy and excitement on March 7th, as athletes from schools across Northern California gathered for the annual Dan Gabor Invitational, one of the region’s largest early track meets.
“It’s a memorial meet, so it’s a meet where we can honor Amador Valley alums, and show them support, and make sure their legacy lives on. That’s obviously a very important thing,” said Coach P, jumps coach.
The invitational, named after former Amador Valley athlete Dan Gabor, also known as Danny, has become a staple of the local track and field calendar. For athletes and coaches, it marks both the start of a competitive season and a celebration of the program’s legacy.
“It gives us a chance to celebrate Danny; it gives us a chance to celebrate the program and some of the people that have come through it and all of its history, and in its time the meet has gone really well. It reflects well on our program now, as well as the history of it. I’ve said before, it’s the 2nd biggest meet in Northern California, and the amount of people that come through here is huge,” said head coach, Coach Ozzie.
Athlete Preparation for Big Competition
The invitational also plays an important role in supporting the team’s activities throughout the year, bringing together schools, volunteers, and community members who help make an event so large possible.
“A lot of people are opening up their seasons here and it’s our biggest fundraising meet for the program [which] supports everything that we do for the rest of the year. So from a local perspective, [the invitational] is huge for our program and what we hope to accomplish to set everything up for the year, essentially,” said Coach P.
Beyond the meet preparation, coaches also focus heavily on preparing athletes to compete at a meet of this scale against large fields of talented schools.
“Preparation is everything, and the biggest thing that I like to think about preparation is setting proper expectations. It really all starts with mental. I had a coach of mine once tell me, mental is to physical as three is to one. And it’s very important for us to come in at the right headspace mentally, if we’re going to hope to accomplish anything for the program and for the school,” continued Coach P.
Rising to the Competition
For many athletes, the invitational provides an early opportunity to measure themselves against strong competitors from other schools while gaining valuable experience that can help shape the rest of their seasons.
“A big meet like this helps me prepare for the rest of the season by seeing the competition and allowing me to push myself to go faster and harder in practices,” said Granada Sprinter, Zoe Aguilar (‘28).
Competing against different schools also adds excitement and thrill to those competing at the invitational.
“Competition against so many schools, rather than being daunting, is actually pretty fun because it gives you the opportunity to make new friends from schools that are farther away,” said Anya Harris (‘28).
Continuing a Legacy
Even as the meet grows larger each year, it stays rooted in honoring the athlete whose name it carries and the impact he had on the track and field program.
“Danny Gabor is the only state champion we’ve ever had in track and field, and for a long time, he was the only state champion that ever came through Amador. He won the state championship in the 800 meter in 1987, and was just a charismatic guy that cared for the program, the school, and the team,” said Coach Ozzie.
Looking Ahead
The Dan Gabor Invitational leaves more than just results behind. It provides athletes with early season experiences, strengthens the local track community, and continues a tradition that has become central to the program at Amador Valley. For most competitors, the Dan Gabor Invitational is not only a test of speed or endurance, but also the starting point of a successful track season to come.
