Amador Valley junior point guard Jaylen Smith (’26) has had a vital role on the varsity basketball team since his freshman year. He carries a role that has expanded within each year, solidifying his status as an Amador Valley varsity basketball star. Over the past three seasons, Smith has developed into one of the team’s central contributors.
“Jaylen has a very calm playing style. He plays at his own pace and doesn’t let the speed of the game change that; he’s a fast and strong player. He’s a scoring guard with the ability to play make. He doesn’t have a weak point in his game,” said team manager, Ricardo Keomany (‘27).

As the season progresses, the basketball program has taken notice of details that influence possession. Even when the ball isn’t in Smith’s hands, his presence is felt across the court.
“Some people might not notice Jaylen’s off-ball movement and gravity. He moves the defense even when he doesn’t have the ball,” said Keomany.
Smith’s teammates also point to his communication skills on the court and his in-game leadership. This is an important part of the team’s structure.
“Some things Jaylen does that you wouldn’t notice as a spectator is his ability to communicate to his teammates whether it is to tell them what play to run or just giving them that extra boost of confidence they need,” said Elijah Stanley (‘27).

Smith’s growing leadership and responsibilities have lined up with the continued development of his skills. Teammates emphasize that his on-court style reflects a controlled, confident approach typical of an Amador Valley varsity basketball star.
“I would describe Jaylen’s playstyle as very poised and very ball-dominant, as he has an excellent skill set, especially when it comes to his 3-pointer,” said Stanley.
Smith’s growth has attracted attention from various colleges. His recruitment process reflects his expanded presence in the East Bay Athletic League (EBAL). It also shows the athletic goals he entered in the later stages of his high school basketball career.
“[I have received offers from] Weber State University, Montana, New Mexico, LMU, Pepperdine, San Francisco, University of San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Jose State,” said Jaylen Smith (‘26).
Leadership Goals and the Road to State
Smith views his role on the team as one of leadership and direction. He emphasizes responsibilities that extend beyond just playing the game.
“My position is to be a point guard and be a strong leader for my team,” said Smith.
The Amador Valley varsity basketball star outlined specific goals for this season. He highlighted both personal and whole-team ambitions they hope to achieve as they progress.
“My goal is to win MVP in the league, and as far as the team goes, I want us to make it to state, something that Amador Valley hasn’t been to for a while, so I want to achieve that for our team,” said Smith.

Teammates say that playing with Smith has affected the way they perform on the court. This is especially true in quick thinking or high-pressure moments.
“Playing with Jaylen has made me better because playing with him takes a lot of stress off me, especially when scoring. When I’m off the court and Jaylens on the court, I barely have to stress because I know our team is in good hands,” said Stanley.

“My dad has made a really big impact as far as my journey. He’s definitely trained me over the years and prepared me for my dreams to go division one and play in the NBA,” said Smith.
