Every year, millions of children in the U.S. spend weeks in hospitals, separated from their friends and school. Cardz for Kidz, a new club on campus, hopes to show their support for these children by making cards and other crafts for them. The club meets weekly on Thursdays, in E-1, in Ms. Foley’s classroom.
“I started the club because I want to be a pediatric nurse when I’m older and I feel like at Amador, we didn’t have a club related to helping children,” said Cardz for Kidz President Oliva Rowe (‘28).
The club differs from other service clubs at Amador. Instead of having the broad goal of community service, it focuses on helping children specifically. In addition, it gives members the opportunity to collaborate and connect with others who share their same values. Members say they joined the club because they hope to have a career that involves working with children.
Making an Impact
The club is a chapter of the larger non profit organization based in Chicago, Cardz for Kidz . The organization is dedicated to raising spirits by delivering handmade cards. The Amador club sends their cards to the organization on a bimonthly basis. The cards are then distributed to hospitals around the world.
“We’re building a community, and also art is a very calming activity which is good because school is stressful for a lot of people,” said Cardz for Kidz Vice President Zooey Winchell (‘28).
The club allows members to make a positive impact in children’s lives, while also giving them a way to destress. Members not only make cards, but also bracelets, other small crafts, and even discuss different topics as a club.
“I think this club has taught me to have empathy, and to think about what everyone’s different situation is,” said Cardz for Kidz Club Member Anna Corkorc (‘28).
Members mention how being thoughtful about what they write on the cards helps them sympathize with the children in hospitals.
Looking Ahead
“I hope in the future it can grow into a bigger club, do more fundraising, and school wide events,” said Rowe (‘26).
The club hopes to host events with a larger impact, like Wish Week. This is a week-long fundraising event for children with critical illnesses. Their goal is to inspire students to make a difference in the lives of children around the world.
