Trader Joe’s has a variety of flowers that are ideal for making bouquets.

With summer inching closer each day, it’s time to close off the spring season with this creative, trendy activity: creating flower bouquets.

Despite the intricate and elaborate appearance of bouquets, they are actually quite easy to make. Only requiring a few materials, making bouquets can quickly become a new hobby.

Origin

While the true origin of flower bouquets is still unconfirmed, they have been thought to originate as early as the seventeenth century. Flower bouquets were traditionally a significant part of wedding ceremonies in ancient Roman times and signified several different meanings based on flower types, smell, and color.

Today, social media apps such as TikTok and Instagram have greatly contributed to the popularity of bouquets. This trend has especially expanded the meaning of bouquets, as they are now used for several different occasions, such as birthday parties, anniversaries, and home decor.

“Flower bouquets are really special to me. They symbolize love and appreciation, and they are just a nice gesture to family and friends,” said Caydence Likeness (‘25).

How to make a flower bouquet

Time: 20 minutes

Materials: Flowers, brown paper bag, rubber band, ribbon, scissors

  1. First, you want to pick out your flowers. Some great places for inspiration and color schemes are Pinterest, Instagram, or TikTok. Any type of flower and color will work, but it is recommended to use a variety of opposing colors to make each flower pop.
  2. Second, layer your flowers. When putting together your bouquet, make sure to alternate between flowers as you see fit.
  3. After you arrange your flowers, take a rubber band and loop one half of the flowers, twist the band once, then loop the other half of the flowers until secured.
  4. This next part is optional, but you can take a pair of scissors and cut off the ends of the stems to even them out and help facilitate new growth.
  5. Next, take a large, brown paper bag and open the bottom. Then, cut around a fifth of the bag off. Fold the bag in half so the top corners are side by side, and place the flowers on it. Fold and wrap the bag around the flowers and secure it with a bow or ribbon.
