While most students are still sleeping, Vice Principal Akhil Raman’s day has already begun. As the sun rises, he balances family life, early responsibilities, and school leadership.
“I usually wake up by 6:15. Depending on if my little infant son is awake or not, I play with him a little bit, and I come to campus. I am usually the first admin on campus since I do the A period coverage. So I usually try to get here before 7:15,” said Raman.
Once he gets to campus, the pace of the day immediately picks up. The time spent on campus before the first bell is filled with supervision and preparation that sets the tone for the rest of the day.
“From 7:15 until school starts, whether it’s 8:30 or 8:50 on block days, we’re just supervising the area, answering emails, and any meetings with parents, students, and teachers. Once school starts, the day is actually pretty fluid,” said Raman.
Balancing Structured Days and Surprises
Throughout the school day, Raman moves between meetings, classrooms, and hallways, shifting his focus on what students and staff need. Some days are fluid and structured, while others change direction spontaneously.
“None of the days are the same. Some days I’m packed with meetings all day. Some days my calendar is free, so I’m able to walk around, visit classrooms, talk to students, talk to teachers, help out with any discipline. I usually clock out at 4 o’clock, sometimes 4:30, but sometimes as late as 5.30 if we have a long meeting,” said Raman.
After School Responsibilities
Even after the final bell, his responsibilities don’t always end at 3:22. Athletics, school events, and other school activities keep him involved and often extend his schedule, which he blends with personal time.
“I go home, try to get a quick workout in, then spend time with my wife and son. I do come back at night if we have a game where admin is necessary. For example, if you have a home basketball game, or if I need to do an away game where they need an admin. Then, I go home and spend more time with my family, eat a meal, and go to sleep,” said Raman.
More Than Discipline
Beyond his schedule, Mr. Raman describes his role as a vice principal as a balance between leadership, support, and accountability. His work reaches beyond discipline, as he is involved in nearly every part of the Amador Valley community.
“As a vice principal, [there are] multiple roles. Instructional leadership, I oversee the math, science, and the career technical education department. Student discipline, that’s all of us, though, all the vice principals do student discipline, [and] collaborate with other district leaders on policies that we need to implement,” said Raman.
Supporting Amador Valley’s Community
As the campus grows quiet at the end of the day, Mr. Raman’s day reflects the constant movement of our admin behind the scenes of school life. From early mornings to late night events, his role shows flexibility, leadership, and determination to the school and its students.
