Amador has over 50 different clubs on campus. One of these is the Astronomy Club, which informs students about the world beyond our planet through lectures, end-of-lesson quizzes, and stargazing nights.
“So my freshman year, I saw this club at the club fair. I was like, you know, I’ve had somewhat of an interest in the past. And I think it would be kind of cool. And so look where I’m at now. Yeah. I think it’s just cool to follow your interests. And if you have any interest in astronomy, then I think you should definitely join the club and learn a little bit more,”said Vice President Abe Kiziloglu.
Inside Astronomy Club meetings
During club meetings, officers present slide-show presentations about space and technology. Members listen carefully during these lectures and are tested through Kahoots and Gimkits for candy. Occasionally, the club hosts stargazing nights where members meet at a specific sight to observe the stars at night with telescopes.
“We want to teach people about general astronomy, and we have tried to have Stargazing Nights so we can bring out the telescopes, you know, and show people some of the planets that you can see, you know, the nebula and star clusters and stuff like that. We want to bring general knowledge to those who are interested,” said Kiziloglu.
The Importance of Astronomy
In general, it is important to understand astronomy and the universe because our world has a past, and it is essential to understand it. It can be mind-blowing to see life outside of our planet and how small we are compared to the entire solar system.
“Astronomy is a huge topic because we’re such a small part of a great observable universe, and really understanding how everything else works around us, because that’s really 99.99% of the universe. And we’re often so focused on such a small aspect. And so I find astronomy to be really empowering to understand what the stores are, what do you see when you go up when you look up in the night sky, right? Is there a chance of any other worlds or exoplanets where aliens could live?” said Treasurer Aarav Juneja.
Inspiring Future Scientists
Joining the Astronomy club can be helpful to future scientists and anyone interested in a major focused on studying space and the universe. It can give basic understanding and knowledge to anyone who feels like they might have a future in the topic. The club meets in R-201 during Lunch.
“More people should definitely learn because there is so much beyond Earth that there is to know. And understanding the stars and celestial objects is just really important to understanding further signs,” said club member Aryo Bhowmik.
