The Museum on Main is located on 603 Main Street Pleasanton, CA 94566. It is a place for the community of Pleasanton to remember their history and why they should preserve it.
“Our primary job is to preserve the history of the Pleasanton area and broadcast it. Get it out to the public and make sure that the community can stay in contact with its history. [Our history is important because] if you don’t know where you come from, you have no idea where you’re going,” said Curator Ken MacLennan.
Pleasanton’s History
Through the many exhibits in the museum, you can learn more about the history of Pleasanton. Exhibits include ancient artifacts and stories that go back many years.
“You will find objects, pictures, and stories about the history of the area from before Spanish contact and invasion, all the way into the 21st century. So you learn about how this rancho became a small California railway town and how that railway town became a big Bay Area suburb,” said MacLennan.
Volunteer Opportunities for Students
Many students at Amador have volunteered at the museum to gain volunteer hours as well as experience for future opportunities.
“Most of the time, I did busy work, but they had a lot of things that needed to be organized, so I would organize a bunch of old documents, old photographs, and old items,” said Leona Jew (‘27).
Even with all the busy work involved, there are countless of ways to socialize and meet new people. They get to have fun while also aiding in the preservation of the town’s history.
“It’s a hub for teams. Like, there are a lot of other teenagers at the museum. So sometimes on Saturday mornings, we’ll group together and we’ll just chat and we’ll have a fun time. So I think it’s a good place for people to become friends,” said Jew.
You can get involved in the museum in many ways. Some of them include connecting through their website, email, or even their physical location.
“It’s really easy to be a volunteer at the museum. You could just walk through the doors, and say, ‘Hey, I want to volunteer.’ They’ll give you a form to sign, and then you’re ready to come in [and volunteer] whenever,” said Jew.
