Icons André Leon Talley and Thierry Mugler both left a mark on the fashion industry that will continue long after their passing.

Recently, the world lost two magnificent figures in the world of fashion, Andre Leon Talley and Thierry Mugler.

André Leon Talley

American journalist and Vogue editor, André Leon Talley, suffered from a fatal heart attack on January 18th, at the age of 73. His enthusiasm and eagerness to help others made him well known within his colleagues, who were devastated by his death.

Talley will be remembered as the trail blazing editor-at-large of Vogue Magazine, who inspired black designers and models in the industry. His flamboyant style left an impact on many.

“I adored Andre… being in his presence was so magical,” said model Tyra Banks on Entertainment Tonight.

Along with being an inspiration to fellow celebrities and fans alike, his influence continues to live on after his death. He was the first black person to hold his position at Vogue, paving the way for other black designers and models to shine within the business.

“It was sad to see such a fashion icon go, but at least I know that six decades in the fashion industry will live on through his designs,” said Tianna Hekmaty (‘24).

Manfred Thierry Mugler

Extravagant French fashion designer, Thierry Mugler, passed away on January 23rd due to an unknown cause. He was best known for his extravagant fashion shows and perfumes, making the most of his exploding popularity in the 1980s and 90s.

Mugler held his fashion shows in areas reminiscent of arenas. His collections always had creative themes; sci-fi, aquatic, and vampire-devil being a few of many. He designed costumes for many productions as well, including musical comedies, concerts, and operas.

“The intricate details and exquisite beauty of Mugler’s work is awe-inspiring. I fell in love with it the moment I laid eyes on it,” said Brinda Venkat (‘24).

Along with fashion designing, Mugler also created a famous perfume by the name “Angel.” The perfume includes but is not limited to scents of honey, vanilla, chocolate, and caramel. After the success of Angel, he continued on to create “Alien” and “Mirror.”

As a fashion icon known for legendary runway shows, Mugler revolutionized the fashion world. He was a visionary who’s cutting-edge designs were worn by Madonna, Celine Dion, and Cardi B, as well as collaborations with Kim Kardashian.

“There is no one like you! Your transformations, your magic! I am honored to have met you, spent time with you, and be a muse for you,” said Kim Kardashian on Instagram.
