Alone on Valentine’s Day Playlist

Trisha Khattar and Nina Moothedath

Our “Alone on Valentine’s Day” playlist consists of three segments: sadness, bittersweet anger, and self-love celebration.

1. Dancing With Your Ghost – Sasha Sloan

2. I miss you, I’m sorry – Gracie Abrams

3. It rains in nyc – dalynn

4. Heather – Conan Gray

5. Falling – Harry Styles

We begin with five songs that allow you to wallow in your sadness, whether you are recently single or have been for a long time. In Dancing With Your Ghost, Sasha Sloan questions how she would ever be able to love again. I miss you, I’m sorry has Gracie Abrams reminiscing on a relationship she just can’t let go of. It rains in nyc, sung by our very own Amador senior Dalynn Miller, follows her as she sings about her love leaving her in New York City. In Heather, Conan Gray wishes he was the one his crush was in love with, not Heather. And to close off the quintuplet, we have Falling, in which Styles tries to come to terms with his ending relationship and guilt for it.

6. I’m so tired – Lauv & Troye Sivan

7. No Time to Die – Billie Eilish

8. Set Fire to the Rain – Adele

9. Avenir – Louane

10. Plenty More. – Kiana Lede

Our next five songs capture more bittersweet feelings, as their singers find their strength. In I’m so tired, Lauv and Troy Sivan sing about realizing how tired they are of love songs romanticizing relationships. No Time to Die by Billie Eilish is a song in which we follow the realization of and moving on from a betrayal. Set Fire to the Rain uses Adele’s powerful vocals to explore breaking off a relationship for the better. Avenir, by french singer Louane, follows the singer indulging in anger towards her ex, but also taking the time to focus on her own abilities and goals, with the title literally translating to “future”. Finally, Plenty More by Kiana Lede follows the singer letting out her frustrations and making it clear that she won’t be pushed around any longer.

11. Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) – Beyonce

12. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

13 Ex’s and Oh’s – Ellie King

14. I’m Still Standing – Elton John

15. Clean – Taylor Swift

Our last five songs are the light at the end of the tunnel: a celebration of self-love. We begin with Single Ladies, of course, where Beyonce rallies “all the single ladies” to dance away their troubles and forget men. Gloria Gaynor, in the 1986 rock classic I Will Survive, sings of how she has grown from the end of her relationship and reiterates her strength now that her boyfriend is out of her life. Ex’s and Oh’s talks of breaking hearts and living life freely while Elton John continues Gaynor’s message of surviving after a bad relationship. We end this playlist with Clean by Taylor Swift, who, in this ballad, sings of feeling “clean” of someone after they have gone as well as accepting that some part of her still wants them.
