Daniel Dumile, best known by his stage name MF DOOM or simply DOOM, was a British-American rapper and record producer. Remembered for his intricate wordplay, metal mask, and “supervillain” persona, Dumile became a major figure of underground hip hop in the 2000s.

On New Year’s Eve 2020, news broke of the death of MF DOOM. At 49 years of age, his untimely death provoked an outpouring of tributes; many made DOOM the last artist they listened to in 2020.

“MF DOOM was one of my all time favorite artists, not only because of his unmatched lyricism, but because he dared to push the limits of hip-hop. The production on his songs was jaw-dropping. I’ve spent countless hours listening to his instrumentals alone. Each beat sounded wildly different, drawing samples from unexpected places, while still incorporating the classic groove of rap music,” said Yash Deshmukh (‘21).

DOOM was one of the most significant musicians of underground hip hop throughout the last twenty years.

“DOOM’s voice and flows captivated me to get sucked into his music for hours. As many said, he was your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, and we will be forever indebted to his contributions to hip-hop,” said Deshmukh.

With several projects chock-full of unique sounds in addition to innovative and brilliant wordplay, his legacy is immense. Just remember, all caps when you spell the name.
