The WNBA recently played their 2020 Championship game at the IMG Academy where Seattle Storm played the Las Vegas Aces to compete to become the champions of the 2020 season.

Unlike any of the seasons they have experienced before, the WNBA played in the “wubble” without any fans to cheer them on.

“I think the biggest difference from playing in the wubble verses playing in their arena is home court advantage. They showed up at the same gym everyday with the same people and none of their fans. The fans often motivate the players to keep going when they’re absolutely exhausted,” said Emma Baer (‘23).

It came down to the Seattle Storm and the Las Vegas Aces to fight and compete to become champions of this crazy season.

“Seattle has been a powerhouse the past few years with Sue Bird, Jewell Lloyd, Brianna Stewart, and Jordan Canada. Sue Bird is one of the greatest players of all time and she’s been playing some of her best basketball ever despite her age so going into that, I kind of knew that the Storm were going to win. The Aces are still a good team but they are super young and not as experienced so it was easy for Seattle to get the sweep,” said Isabella Mauricio (‘21).

Ultimately, playing at the “wubble” located at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida not only affected the players physically but emotionally as well.

“Physically, they were playing every other day with very few breaks. While it was nice not to travel, you could tell by the end of the season that the players were tired. Emotionally, I think it’s even harder for the players than physically. A majority of them are away from their families and couldn’t go into the outside world,” said Baer.

Throughout the season the WNBA had faced challenges with being away from home and playing without any fans. These two teams gave it all they had with their strong mentality and positive spirit. With the Seattle Storm as the 2020 WNBA Champions, next season will be even more interesting to watch with teams who are ready to get back into the gym and work!
