As Halloween approaches, teachers across the campus are reflecting on favorite costume memories from their childhood. From charming classics to more creepy choices, these teachers have surprising and entertaining stories to tell.
The Iconic Bee
AP Stats and Honors Geometry teacher Nicole Louie dressed up as a bee from the classic series Winnie the Pooh in the Halloween of 2004. The franchise was a popular series during this time, leading to this particular costume standing out to her among her many favorites. Winnie’s obsession with honey in the series leads to many bees, resulting in the initial idea for this charming costume.
“Well, I was a toddler, so my parents chose that costume [for me]. But I liked Winnie the Pooh at that time,“ said Louie.
Pirates for Days
Honors Pre-Calculus and Multi-Variable Calculus teacher Gauri Reyes turned herself into a pirate for many years. She chose this costume so often because it was not too challenging to put together yearly.
“Back then, the kit usually had the name of a superhero or something on it, and then a plastic face mask. Those face masks were really uncomfortable, and I remember the inside near the mouth and nose would always get condensation on it because there wasn’t enough of a vent for the nose and mouth,” said Reyes.
Up The Hill
AP World and U.S. History teacher Jill Battilega went for a partner costume as a kid, dressing up with a friend named Jacqueline as Jack and Jill from the classic childhood nursery rhyme. Every Halloween, a large group of families in her neighborhood would eat dinner together and then go out trick-or-treating in their costumes.
“My grandma helped make the costume, and she even had this red wig I wore and put freckles on my face. But it was fun because I was doing it with my best friend. [The character] was my name, and I loved my grandma’s costume,” said Battilega.
A Whole New World
Honors Algebra II teacher Samantha Allen trick-or-treated around her neighborhood as Disney princess Jasmine from the movie Aladdin one year in Kindergarten, coming home on Halloween night with loads of candy that she sorted with her sisters.
“I think it was my favorite [costume] because my mom made it. She sewed everything herself with the help of her friend. But it pretty much looked exactly like Jasmine, and then I even had sandals that she spray-painted gold and [I] put jewels on to look exactly like her,” said Allen.
