The Grammy Awards, a well-awaited award show, aired for viewers on Sunday, Feb. 2nd on CBS at 5:00 pm PST. People look forward to the Grammys for entertainment and to stay updated on music industry trends.
When asked why she liked watching the Grammys, Sharika Sunkara (27’) said, “Because they are entertaining.”
A Musical History
The Grammys have been entertaining Americans since they first started in Los Angeles in 1959. They were created to honor those in the field of music and named after Thomas Edison’s invention of the gramophone. Their gramophone-shaped trophies are a significant symbol of the iconic award show.
Notable Wins
Famous singers like Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce were at the Grammys this year, among several others. A key win in the Grammys this year was Kendrick Lamar winning five, the highest number of Grammys this year in categories like Music video and Rap performance. He has won 57 Grammys so far, making him one of the most highly awarded rappers. Though Kendrick Lamar fans were thrilled, others were displeased with his high number of wins.
“I believe that Kendrick Lamar did not deserve the amount of Grammys he won this year,” said Sunkara.
Sabrina Carpenter was also in the spotlight this year. She was nominated for six Grammys and won two for her album Short n’ Sweet and song “Espresso.” Sabrina fans were thrilled to know about her victory as this was her first Grammy ever received.
“[A highlight was definitely] Sabrina Carpenter winning her first Grammy Award. She deserves it,” said Simran Shinkre (27’) .
One of the controversial awards of this year was Beyonce getting Best Album of the year, leaving many fans disappointed.
“I also believe that Beyonce did not deserve to win album of the year [because] the album of the year was not it.” said Sunkara.
Declining Viewership
Over the years however, there has been a drop in the number of teenagers and young adults that actually watch the show on TV, as most prefer to just get the key information from clips and snippets off of social media. Students often find that watching smaller clips to just get the main information is more efficient than actually watching the staggering 8 hour award show.
“I didn’t watch it, but I saw the clips of it so I could see what’s happening throughout the Grammys without watching the entire thing,” said Shinkre.
Overall, despite the number of viewers that watch the entire show declining, fans are still eager to watch their favorite artists in hopes that they win the awards, even when they are disappointed by some of the selections.
