AJ Johnson (‘23) is a multi-sport athlete in football and wrestling at Amador Valley. He continues to stand out in both of his sports as his final athletic season with wrestling comes near to the end.

“My roles on the varsity football team were starting right tackle and team captain. My roles on the varsity wrestling team are the heavyweight (class) as well as a captain,” said Johnson.

As a captain and leader in both sports, Johnson inspires his teammates each day and leads the team by example. His strengths and attributes in both sports have ultimately earned him the captain roles.

“AJ was an outstanding teammate. He always focused on getting better, but at the same time coached up the younger guys to help them improve as well. He was just one of those guys that you couldn’t not like. AJ had your back on and off the field,” said quarterback Drew Souza (‘24).

Players recognized Johnson’s ability to stand out as an athlete on the field and a student off the field. Johnson’s character in the locker room helped build the team’s chemistry with each other.

“Having a standout lineman protect you in the pocket was great. I was able to be more comfortable and focus on my progressions. It was special,” said Souza.

Along with his great leadership and off-field success, Johnson’s skillset and influence on the team makes him stand out. Despite Johnson’s wrestling success throughout his high school career, he doesn’t plan to continue the sport in college.

“My favorite sport to play is football because I like the team aspect of it. I plan to play football in college but I am undecided where yet,” said Johnson.

It is a special opportunity to play a sport at the next level. Johnson has proven to display the self-sacrifice it takes to commit himself to succeed. He has accomplished a lot in high school and looks forward to his bright future.

“My current personal best is being recognized as an all-league football player and wrestler,” said Johnson.
