Amador students share their favorite rom coms to watch on Valentine’s Day.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You

Why limit yourself to one love story on the day that celebrates love? This classic rom com follows two budding romances and hits every high school clique you can think of, from the iconic party scene to the early 2000’s outfits to Heath Ledger pouring his heart out in song.

“I never get bored watching this movie. I’ve watched it probably 20 times or more, I love it. There are so many good one liners too–my sister and I quote this movie all the time because it’s so funny,” said Sofia Carreira (‘27)

2. The Hitch

This 2000’s rom com follows Will Smith as a modern day cupid, helping the men of New York fall in love. Trouble follows when he himself falls for an uptight, cynical journalist with her own agenda. Viewers will delight in the multiple storylines, outrageous scenarios, and guaranteed laughs.

“I think Will Smith is so funny, and I don’t usually don’t love romance movies but I love The Hitch. I don’t think a lot of people know about this movie, I never hear anyone talk about it but it’s so good!” said Vivian Liu (‘27).

3. La La Land

This movie is a slightly more realistic take on the modern love story, despite the characters breaking into song every five minutes. After winning 18 major awards the year it was released, this film was dubbed a classic in the making, and a must watch for any rom-com enthusiast–it will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

“I love Damien Chazelle, his films like Whiplash and La La Land always have really incredible music. The film combines the nostalgia of old hollywood musicals like Singing in the Rain with a modern twist of not getting a happy ending, and I think that makes it much more realistic than any other romance movie,” said Kevin Zhu (‘23).

4. When Harry Met Sally

The 80’s rom com that invented the friends to lovers trope takes place over 10 years. The story is conversation-driven and set in New York during the winter, making it a perfect watch for the season. This heartwarming film is a true classic.

“I like to think of this as an elevated rom com. Some romance movies, especially the new ones, are really cringy, but this one is a classic. I would recommend it to anyone,” said Arushi Garg (‘23).

5. Clueless

Spend this Valentine’s Day with someone who’s just as clueless about love as you are. Cher Horowitz is your typical popular LA socialite with a heart of gold, known for delivering iconic lines such as “as if” and “I am totally buggin’.”

“Cher is really cute, she has the best outfits, and she’s actually nice. She’s such an icon. I don’t know how I feel about step-sibling relationships though,” said Y-duyen Nguyen (‘23).

6. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Fast-paced and funny, this classic rom com follows yet another journalist trying to make it big in New York city. Andi Anderson’s plan to make her boyfriend run for the hills doesn’t go according to plan because he has something bigger to gain from sticking around. This setup is sure to get messy, but in the end, love prevails once again.

“I’m glad this movie is trending again. It’s probably my favorite rom-com because I love Matthew McConaughey and it’s so funny,” said Carreira
