The Amador Valley Varsity Competition Cheer team competed at the regional competition at James Logan High School on December 11. They worked hard and brought home two first place plaques for Amador. The entire competition team and one select stunt group competed, and both beat all of the other schools in their divisions.

The Varsity Competition team began their season in the summer, and has worked tirelessly through injuries and illnesses.

“We have had a lot of injuries this year especially coming off our first competition but thankfully we have a great reserve of athletes on our sideline team that are willing to step in and it has all gone smoothly since then.” said Cheer Coach Eileen Drury.

The athletes had a positive attitude going into their first competition being back after recovering from injuries.

“Going into this competition we wanted our team to hit zero and put our best foot out on the floor and give 110% regardless of the situation,” said Shay McIntyre (22).

With the excitement also came some nervousness before the cheerleaders hit the mat.

“Our elite stunts are always a challenge because they are the hardest part of the routine and their the hardest part to master but we spent a lot of time working on them this week” said Drury

Upon exiting the competition floor, the team’s positive attitudes and energy was even further elevated.

“I would describe our performance as 10 out of 10 and amazing. Although there were some wobbly stunts we still kept the energy up,” said Shay McIntyre (22).

After finding out the team got first place, Drury was a proud Coach.

“What made me most proud was seeing all the fight that happened at this competition and seeing all the positive attitudes from the leaders on the team and everyone else being willing to step into that culture as well,” sa

This weekend’s win only gave the team more momentum going forward as the competitions get more difficult.

“We are going to continue to condition. We’ve been doing a lot of running to build endurance, so we are going to continue to condition at the beginning of practices, run full outs, work on technique and really just make our routine look polished overall,” said Drury.
