Looking into Next Year: Changes with Construction and Changes to Club Renewals

Construction Rocks AV's Landscape

According to a recent administrative email sent to the Amador community, the construction will impact the gym, the theater (and surrounding area), the walkways, the bike storage area, and many of the portables. One of the most significant changes will be the temporary closure of the large gym beginning May 18th.

“We’re just trying to have minimal disruption to every body’s life on campus. It’ll be open before school starts back in the fall. We’re looking at around August 3rd or so,” said Norrington.

How Construction Will Change Traffic

The fencing required during construction will also alter the flow of foot and bike traffic on campus. The entrance near the theater and the north side of the office will be closed due to construction surrounding the theater.

“That [entrance] by the theater is going to be fenced off. There’s going to be construction going on. We can’t have people walking through a construction zone. It’s unsafe,” said Norrington.

New Club Policies

The changes continue as Amador clubs have been hit with new policies that force club officers to participate only in a few clubs, rather than those they choose. The officers have mixed emotions about these new policies and are forced to adjust their schedules accordingly. These new changes have caused club members to completely change their approach to clubs.

“I was shocked and surprised. I was really angry that they gave us such a short deadline for this. I haven't even released the deadline yet. I was so furious when they gave it out to us without any preemptive notice.  We should at least have gotten in a preemptive notice,” says Chess and Astronomy Club Officer Neal Goswami (‘28).

If It Works, Don't Change It: Annual Traditions and Parking Spots

However, despite that construction work and campus changes will be a part of the upcoming school year at Amador, students can also expect to celebrate time-honored traditions.

The Class of 2027 will begin their last year earlier than other students, with some senior events beginning August 7, when seniors will receive their parking passes. They will return to campus on August 10, for the second annual Senior Day. The day begins with Senior Sunrise and continues with yet more campus activities celebrating our seniors.

“It starts with Senior Sunrise, and then after Senior Sunrise, the seniors come back to school, the class officers will host a little brunch, and then they get to chalk their parking spots,” said Leadership Advisor Wendy Connelly.

An annual back-to school rally is always the Aloha Rally. For years, it has been a way to welcome students back to school and say “Aloha” to incoming freshmen. In 2024, seniors were given a place of honor, decked out in golden crowns. (Wendy Connelly)

Updates to Rally Participation

In addition to decorating their parking spaces, seniors will also be able to buy special tee shirts and participate in other activities aimed at building school spirit before classes begin. Amador is also trying to expand rally participation to include more students. Next year, students interested in participating in the rallies will have the chance to sign up.

“We have a new thing next year for all kids who might want to be involved in a rally. They’ll get to sign up on a sheet so that we can invite more kids to be in rallies this year,” said Connelly.

Returning Again: Don Pick-Up Day!

According to leadership teacher Wendy Connelly, next year’s schedule will continue to build on the success of Don Pickup Day while also introducing new events focused on increasing student involvement. In addition, some traditions introduced this past year will continue after receiving positive student feedback. One of those new traditions is allowing students to have their class pictures taken before the school year starts.

“That went really well last year, and kids kind of like not having to take their photos during school,” Connelly sai
