On Friday, Oct. 24, the annual Mr. Amador reveal was held in the main quad at lunch. Many anticipate this event every year. It is the first introduction of the boys to the student body. At the reveal, lunch-goers were greeted with upbeat dance routines and lots of energy, both of which were well-received.
“They did a really good job, making a whole atmosphere for it. Their dance performance surprised me – I didn’t expect them to start, breaking out into a choreographed number,” said audience member Jasleen Singh (‘27).
The Preparations
Preparing for a performance requires a lot of time and practice. The group puts in a lot of effort to learn and rehearse the routines.
“’We’ve been preparing since August, [and] we’ve had dance practices twice a week, where the boys learned the dance. They learned how to perform basically. We also did a lot of behind the scenes coordination with Black Tie, for example, and with the George Mark Children’s House and admin so that we could pull this event off,” said Mr. Amador director Isabel Lim (‘26).
Pizazz for a Good Cause:
In addition to being a makeshift dance troupe, Mr. Amador notably raises money for the George Mark Children’s House. The House cares for children with severe medical conditions. Last year, Mr. Amador successfully raised a little over $100,000 in funds, all of which went to George Mark’s.
“I didn’t really know much about the program before, but as I learned more about it, I became very appreciative of it. They do a lot of great things for the George Mark Children’s House, care for these terminally ill children over there, and yeah, it’s overall for a great cause,” said Mr. Amador member Ankur Sharma (‘27).
The reveal is a good way to accomplish two things at once. By having such a grand reveal, Mr. Amador retains its traditional aspect while simultaneously spreading awareness.
“The purpose of this reveal was really to get students hyped up for the rest of the year. We [raise] money for the George Mark Children’s House, and we want as many students at Amador to be aware of it as possible, which is why we put together this dance and had all the promotion for the reveal,” said Lim.
What’s Next?
Although Mr. Amador is just three months in, the program has already given back to the community. It is through fundraisers and other events that allows the program to gain an audience and a donor community.
“We’ve volunteered at George Marks, [and] we’ve also done the trunk-or-treat at Walnut Grove – mostly just raising money for the House, and also doing some dances to gain attention,” said Sharma.
As for Mr. Amador’s future endeavors, the team has a long road ahead of them. Ultimately, the Mr. Amador program has an important legacy to uphold – a legacy that will be achieved through further community participation.
“We’re planning a pie-in-the-face fundraiser, [and] we’re doing some sports tournaments involving the boys to raise money. We’re just excited to do all of those things for the House – this is the 21st year of the Mr. Amador program, so I’m really proud that we’ve been able to continue this legacy. I’m really hoping we can raise more than they did last year,” said Lim.
