During Wellness Week at AVHS, students had the chance to unwind and get creative through a relaxing tote bag decorating activity. This was hosted the in the Wellness Center on campus. Instead of the usual rush of academic classes, students found a space to recharge, express themselves, and connect with friends.
“I signed up for this access because I felt like I needed a break from all of my difficult classes. I think signing up for this tote bag activity really helped me. It gave me a chance to relax, focus on something creative, and take a break from technology,” said Olivia Green (‘26).
A Supportive Environment
The Wellness Center Access periods are designed to provide students with a calm and supportive environment. During this special session, students decorated canvas tote bags using paints, markers, and fabric designs. They were instructed to decorate based on a representation of their personalities and emotions. For many, it was a simple, yet, meaningful way to relieve stress and practice mindfulness.
“I feel better without technology, but it depends on what we’re doing on the computer. In most classes, we’re always using computers for research or homework, but in this access, you get more time to be creative and relaxed,” said Green.
Taking a Chance
Some were hesitant at first but they quickly began to feel the relaxation through the calming activity. Many claim they weren’t aware how relaxing the activity was until they started to do it.
“At first it was a little boring, but later on I started to feel more comfortable and have fun. It’s better without a computer because this access is for people who love to spend time with friends or just focus on self-care,” said Lokshana Ashok (’29)
The purpose of Wellness Week activities is to give students a healthy outlet for stress and a chance to reconnect. Although this was just a small activity, it really solidified the impact of taking a break.
“Sometimes the best thing students can do for their mental health is take a pause. Activities like this help them be present and creative, and that helps them feel better throughout the day,” said Support Counselor Jennifer Yu,
For many students, the tote bag decorating session was a reminder that even small moments of creativity can bring balance.
“After this activity, I feel more relaxed, more concentrated, and definitely ready to end my day well,” said Green.
