Amador Valley’s Competition Civics class set up a table in the quad on Tuesday, September 16th, in celebration of National Voter Registration Day. Students had the chance to register and pre-register to vote.
“Voting is one of the most important civic duties that we’ve learned about so far in Comp Civics. It’s probably the most basic way you can impact your government, and especially for young people, it’s really important that you make your voice heard in government,” said Shounak Bhindwale (‘26).
Celebrating Democracy
Americans celebrate National Voter Registration Day is a Civic annually on the third Tuesday of September. Comp Civics, also known as the We the People team, honored the holiday by aiding students in the voting process–a fundamental component of democracy.
“This year, I received some supplemental materials from some voter registration groups, and I just thought it was a nice opportunity that we should take advantage of and set up the table because it’s getting increasingly important to get out there and exercise one’s right to vote,” said Comp Civics coach Stacey Sklar.
Comp Civics Students used their knowledge to help others understand the electoral process. They decorated a table with flyers, QR codes, and important information to make voter registration interesting, simple, and easy to navigate.
“So a lot of students weren’t really aware that [this was] something that they could do. They were confused about how this worked exactly. So we really helped a lot of people go through this process, how they could preregister to vote and what exactly this meant,” said Bhindwale.
Both registering and pre-registering to vote help place students on the pathway to civic engagement.
“At the end of the day, getting to vote is nonpartisan. You can vote, and we don’t care what party you are for, as long as you end up voting, because we think that it’s a core democratic principle that everyone should partake in,” said Lavi Avigad (26).
