The Walmart Neighborhood Market on 3112 Santa Rita Rd, Pleasanton, CA will permanently close on October 3rd 2025. Locals and workers will have to find other alternatives for a main grocery store.
“It’s gonna be exciting ’cause I know I’ll have better opportunities. Hopefully, I can find work closer to home. It’s probably ’cause they’re gonna have better plans. It’s time to move on. The store is probably just losing money, and it doesn’t make sense to stay open,” said Walmart sales associate Ed Santos.
Although the official reason regarding the closing of Walmart is unknown according to Pleasanton Weekly, it is obvious that there are plans for the future in place of Walmart. However, some locals will find it inconvenient to switch to another store for their groceries.
Prospects of inaccessibility
“As a wheelchair user, this store is easy to go to but with the other store, I can’t get there, so I’m stuck. When I read the permanently closing sign, I was hoping somebody else like maybe Lucky would take over. But all other stores are at the other end of the town,” said Mr. Rudolph, a frequent customer.
A lot of people rely on the neighborhood market as their main source of goods and groceries. The closing will force them to shop at other stores that may be farther away. Customers also note that this Walmart in particular has many significant features that make it more efficient than an average grocery store.
Affordable groceries out of reach
“The store had good prices and was always stocked. It also had a really good location and self-checkout, so you didn’t have to wait in the line. It was super efficient. I think a lot of people live close by, so they might have to drive farther to the other Walmart, or they might have to find alternatives that might be more expensive, like Safeway or Trader Joe’s” said Devna Bhandula (‘27).
Other alternatives might be more expensive and less accessible in a multitude of ways. Many hope to have another business take over the location and re-open the opportunity of a fast, convenient grocery store.
“Hopefully, there will be a Neighborhood Walmart in every city. All neighborhoods deserve one store for affordable groceries and other products” said Santos.
