With summer around the corner students are looking for ways to fill the time over summer break. Students and staff around Amador Valley High School share their experiences with reading and recommendations for engaging summer reads.
“I would say that reading is a great escape, and you have plenty of time in the summer. So it’s a great way to stimulate your brain while enjoying a story,” said AV librarian Erik Scherer.
The Amador Valley Library and Pleasanton Public library offer a variety of books in different styles and genres, giving everyone something they might like.
“ I would say books are unique, just like people, and so it really depends on what your interests are,” said Scherer.
For people who enjoy classics, Scherer suggested A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. It is a historical classic taking place in the French Revolution which highlights many themes such as anarchy, resurrection and renunciation that captivate many readers. Although reading may not be for everyone, it can be a way to fill time in the summer and keep your mind sharp over the long break in an easy and fun way.
“I like reading because it’s an escape from daily life. It’s imaginative, so you can kind of do anything you want with a story,” said Razyaa Zaidi (‘27).
Also, reading biographies like A long way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and I am Malala are fascinating reads that expose students to the lives of inspirational figures that spark thought among students.
“ I think that biographies tend to be really good for reluctant readers,” said Scherer.
Overall, there are many genres that may resonate with many individuals making reading a fully personalized, unique and fulfilling hobby to pursue over the upcoming summer break and beyond.
