Joanna Chu

Joanna Chu (’23)

How did you first react when you heard you won the award?

I submitted five pieces from my art studio and five that I created for AP Art, so I thought I had a chance to win something, [but] I was really happy to find out that I won two gold [keys] and that I won five awards in total. I was like shocked. I was so excited. I felt really happy and grateful I won awards for those pieces.

What was your favorite piece you submitted this year?

[My favorite piece was] one I made called “Gondolier in Venice” and that was a watercolour piece that took a really long time and had a lot of detail.

What were the messages or themes you wanted to convey through your piece?

There’s not really a lot of meaning but it shows life in Venice and what one can see when you’re on a gondola trip.
