With political tensions on the rise the whole country is wondering how Biden will put an end to the county’s political division.

Political tensions are higher than ever as Americans take in Biden’s victory in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The change from a strongly republican president to one with opposing democratic ideals will result in a very impactful change in the country. This change sparks a conflict of interest upon many U.S. citizens due to the rivalry like relationship between the political parties.

Rumors of raids and revolts as a lashback to either presidential conidate’s triumph could even be found surfacing around the internet weeks leading up to the election. The ideals Donald Trump shaped his presidency around left the U.S. as an indisputably polarized nation.

“I one hundred percent think Trump has polarized the country. He normalized things like racism, homophobia, sexism, all things that should not be normalized in American culture. This is a man who has had several rape and assult alligations against him. This is a person who retweets things about “white power” or conspiracy theoires. He’s made up everything he can to make sure it looked like democrats were evil.” says Sahana Kumar, (22’).

Although these social and political issues were created by President Trump, the job of resolving them has been left to Joe Biden. The past four years left our nation divided by political beliefs. Labels have been made, assumptions have taken place, and names have been tossed around. Biden himself has acknowledged this issue and made the claim to reunite american citizens during his victory speech.

“I pledge to be a President that seeks not to divide, but unify. Who doesn’t see red states and blue states, only the United states. I worked with all my heart with the confidence of the whole people to win the confidence of all of you. And for that is what I believe America is about. It’s about people, and that’s what our administration will be all about.” says Joe Biden.

The overall political state of the U.S. can in fact be traced back to Trump’s time in office. President Trump’s presidency had numerous pros and cons. It can be argued that many of the actions taken by Trump were nonetheless questionable to both political parties.

“Trumps ideals were never really at question with me, but his actions such as that with corona were a major loss and whether I thought he should’ve won this election or not he screwed himself over by not preparing for something so globally at large that also occurred right at a time in his presidency where he didn’t have enough time to really redeem himself and only get a partial economic build up. So foreign policy I saw was great while in domestic policies he had many more wins than losses, but the quality of his loss to so many voters outdated that of his wins.” says Dylan Easton, (21’)

Like Easton said, many republicans and other American citizens became skeptical about their trust in Trump when these large-scale global events occurred. His approach to the COVID-19 virus was to ignore it, and while this was intended to ease people of their fear it did put our country in a state of question on whether or not he was the man we wanted dealing with the crisis at hand.

“I think the contrast between Trump’s actions and Joe Biden’s plan relating to COVID-19 could have swayed many republicans’ votes. Our country is struggling during the pandemic as we have the most covid deaths and case while our economy is crippling. Whether someone is  a republican or a democrat, we all want to go back to a corona free life and can agree that the country under Trump’s administration has poorly managed the virus. This failure could have persuaded some to support Biden rather than Trump.” says Saksham Nirvan (‘23).

Upon being elected as the forty-sixth president of the United States, Biden delivered a very uplifting and promising victory speech in his home state of Delaware. In his speech he acknowledges problems at hand due to social divides in the U.S.. At one point he gives a shout out to the African American community for having his back in the election.  This was a significant and smiled upon gesture considering the importance of the current Black Lives Matter movement that has surfaced in the recent months. Not only this, but Biden shares his ideal vision of what our country needs to become.

“I believe it’s this: America has called upon us to marshal the forces of decency, the forces of fairness. To marshal the forces of science and the forces of hope in the great battles of our time. The battle to control the virus, the battle to build property, the battle to secure your families healthcare. The battle to achieve racial justice and to root out systemic racism in our country. And the battle to save our planet by getting climate under control.” says Joe Biden.

As inspiring and patriotic as Biden’s speech was, it’s questionable whether or not Biden’s goals are actually achievable in the next four years. People have been working for years before now to put an end to issues like racism and climate change, and these issues show no sign of stopping any time soon. Trump was in very little way close to achieving any of these goals and actually played a role in worsening some problems at hand. Biden’s hopes are high but it’s hard to say whether or not he will be able to recover our country like he promises.

“To be honest I think it will be difficult because Trump made it such an us vs them situation. I definitely think it’ll help that Biden isn’t like promoting hate against Republicans though. maybe they’ll calm down if they see that Bidens tax changes don’t affect that many people? Because I know a lot of Republicans were worried about that.” says Katie Weist (‘22).

The overwhelming mass of problems in our country expands beyond those mentioned in Biden’s speech. Whether these problems are solvable or not citizens are depending on Biden to fulfill his promise of reuniting our country.

Biden’s democratic point of view can very well be a solution to putting an end to polarization in the U.S.. Democratic ideals are often based around the well being of people. This covers things like medical bills and funding for cures to diseases which is something everybody needs now despite their political party.

“The bible tells us to everything there is a season. A time to build, a time to reap, and a time to sow. And a time to heal. This is the time to heal in America.” says Joe Biden.

Many believe that Biden’s accomplishments will surpass those of President Trump. Biden not only received more votes than Trump, but received the most votes of any U.S. president elect in history. It’s very clear that a majority of the population either did not want Trump back in office building up political tension, or believed that Biden had the power to resolve the political tension. Either way, many Americans want to see change in our country that will benefit the well being of the people as a whole and unite us. This is exactly what Joe Biden is promising and one thing Donald Trump could not satisfactorily deliver on.

“I believe that Joe Biden is a better fit than Trump with handling this problem because Joe Biden’s views focus on all Americans. He has been known for wanting to create peace and minimize any tension created between the two political parties. I think his stance on equality will help ease the tensions somewhat because as a president, it would be his duty to serve justice where needed and help Americans with their needs to help lead them to a better tomorrow. I think his future policies will help immensely with putting this country back on track.” says Vaneesha Dave, (22’).
