Thanksgiving is the one day of the year completely dedicated to being

thankful. However, when the clock strikes midnight, the world turns into a chaotic, greedy mess known as

Black Friday.

It seems every year Black Friday starts earlier and earlier, cutting more into

the Thanksgiving holiday. Not only do some stores open as early as 5 PM, but

shoppers also line up hours ahead to get in the store as soon as possible. This is

causing some to completely give up Thanksgiving and loose family time that isn’t

always available.

“My Thanksgiving dinner occurs around 6, but with my grandparents not

coming this year, I’m allowed to skip it,” said junior Tim Weaver.

Instead of celebrating Thanksgiving, Weaver shares, “I’m camping out at

Target to wait in line for a TV that is worth $600 but I’m getting it for $230”.

Not only is Black Friday robbing Thanksgiving from people, it is also violent.

Last year, a Wal-Mart shopper used pepper spray to shoo people away from a case

of Xbox consoles she was waiting to purchase. 20 people had eye irritation and

bruising from this.

This shopper went through extreme measures just to purchase items on sale.

Risking your own and other’s lives in danger is not worth the deals one is receiving.

Black Friday would be much more successful if it did not cause so much

violence. It would also be a more positive experience if it did not take away the

Thanksgiving holiday and the family time offered.

Thanksgiving is meant for individuals to acknowledge what they are thankful

for in their lives. People should celebrate this with the ones they love instead of

going shopping.
