Kwanzaa, a holiday that doesn’t get much light compared to christmas or even hanukkah. Contrary to common belief, Kwanzaa isn’t even a religious holiday! It is a secular festival observed by many African Americans from December 26 to January 1 as a celebration of their cultural heritage and traditional values.

“I don’t know much about Kwanzaa actually… but if there was information on the holiday I‘m sure I’d be more informed and others too!”  Callie Hall (‘18)

Kwanzaa has seven principles that create the structure of the holiday. Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima, Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). These all are very important to african culture in general, but during Kwanzaa it is brought to the surface to really remember the important of these values.

“Kwanzaa is a very important time for my family because we all get together and share love with the others. To explain it better to those who don’t know anything about Kwanzaa… it’s just like christmas! It’s just not a religious holiday. It’s my favorite time of the year, for me and my whole family.”  said Ashwini Nair (‘20)

Kwanzaa is not a winter holiday that gets enough attention for the good values it promotes and if more people were educated on what it was about,, many more people would celebrate it and/or it would be more informed. Imputing all these values in one’s everyday life will only promote wellness, so give it a try and learn more about other cultures and holidays, you never know what things you will learn that aren’t shown at the surface.
