No one could have predicted the terror that unfolded Halloween morning in lower Manhattan when 29-year-old Uzbekistan native Sayfullo Habibullaevich Saipov veered into a bike lane, killing eight and injuring thirteen.

Saipov continued in the lane for one mile before crashing into a school bus full of special needs children. Upon exiting his vehicle, a Home Depot truck, he was shot by NYPD officer Ryan Nash before being taken to the hospital.

Among the victims: Nicholas Cleves, 23, a computer programmer and recent college graduate, Darren Drake, 32, a economic analyst and school board member, Ann-Laure Decadt, 31, a Belgian vacationer. Additionally, Hernán Diego Mendoza, Diego Enrique Angelini, Alejandro Damián Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernán Ferruchi, Argentinians who were having their three decade high school reunion, perished in the attack.

“It’s been shocking. My heart breaks for the victims and their families,” said Andrew Chern (‘18).

Saipov, who immigrated to Ohio in 2010, is said to have been motivated by ISIS propaganda. Saipov claims to have chosen Halloween because there would be more people on the streets. He says he does not regret his actions and is currently being held in FBI custody where he faces terrorism charges from federal prosecutors.

A day after the attack, the FBI took Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32, who is associated with Saipov into custody. Saipov’s wife is also being questioned.

“If it really was [Saipov] who killed these innocent people, he needs to be locked away now,” said Karna Mendonca (‘18).

Since 2014, fifteen vehicular attacks have occurred in both the United States and Europe. These attacks have combined to kill one hundred and forty-two people.

Counting this attack, there have been ten terrorist incidents in New York City since 9/11. Tuesday’s attack represents the deadliest since that fateful day over sixteen years ago.
