King Charles III and Camilla were married in a civil ceremony on April 9, 2005, solidifying their bond and commitment to each other as well as to the monarchy they now lead.

This past weekend, the streets of London were transformed into a magnificent spectacle as an air of grandeur swept through the city.

The sounds of cheering crowds and the dazzle of splendid decorations set the scene for a truly historic occasion that was witnessed in the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and around the world: the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla

“My family and I saw pieces of the Coronation. It was really symbolic for me, as these types of occasions only happen once in a lifetime,” said Agash Morekonda (‘24).

The sheer scale

Graced by the presence of more than 2,300 foreign dignitaries, British officials, celebrities, and faith leaders from around the globe, the Coronation was a generational spectacle that brought certain elements of traditional monarchy and religious substance into the realm of 21st century society.

“I truly did appreciate the moments in the Coronation that had been adapted to reflect modern-day England. While being a traditionally Christian ceremony, several differing cultures and faiths were commemorated. This is truly a new era of monarchy,” said UK resident Prashil Sukla.

Furthermore, Charles ascended to the throne with the Imperial State Crown adorning his figure, being anointed with sacred oil and partaking in a range of customary and religious rituals. With an emphasis on the life-long service he has devoted to his country, Charles was officially crowned as the monarch of the United Kingdom, including its overseas territories and the Commonwealth realms.

“While I personally detest the Royal Family, the Coronation was an event of grandeur and extravagance. I particularly enjoyed listening to the choir and the hymns, and observing the powerful presence that defined the entire event for me,” said South African resident Narendra Khesav.

In addition, Queen Camilla underwent a coronation ceremony of her own, symbolizing her unwavering commitment to duty and the high station she now holds.

The backdrop of the scene

Whilst a lavish and jubilant atmosphere, the Coronation took place in the aftermath of Queen Elizabeth’s recent passing, paving the way for 74-year-old Charles to ascend the throne after a prolonged wait of more than five decades.

“This marks the beginning of a new era and a new beginning for the Commonwealth. I am keen to see how Charles plans to lead the UK and its realms in the modern world of today and the future,” said Morekonda

As the new head of state, Charles will have a range of responsibilities to fulfill, including serving as a unifying force for the nation, representing the UK on the global stage, and upholding the constitutional and ceremonial duties of the monarchy (including lending his voice to various social and charitable causes).

“The UK has had to revamp a lot of its official documents to reflect the ascension of King Charles. He will now be featured on items that people use on an almost daily basis in Britain – all the way from stamps to bank notes,” said Sukla

Following the regal procession and sacred anointment, a diverse array of cultural, popular, and musical luminaries – including Lionel Richie and Katy Perry – joined forces at the Coronation Concert, concluding the occasion’s proceedings in a resounding display of national unity and an allegedly electrifying blend of musical culture.

“I saw individuals from all around the world singing at the Coronation Concert. For example, I saw members of groups from formally colonized parts of the word. This was a nice sight to see,” said British student Khilan Tailor

21st century relevance

Numerous individuals, both at Amador Valley and around the world, have expressed skepticism regarding the relevance of monarchy in the modern era, with several protests being staged in opposition to Charles’ ascension to the throne, even on the day of the Coronation itself.

“The Royal Family does not impact me in any way. I do not see the point of their existence today, especially considering their disgusting, pathetic, and otherwise insulting colonial past. They have a history that should not be honored,” said Khesav

In addition, many have called for the release of precious jewels held by the monarchy  – particularly the Cullinan and Kohinoor diamonds – which are considered to be among the world’s most valuable gems. However, the monarchy has remained tight-lipped on the matter, sparking controversy regarding the rightful ownership of such items.

A new king

All in all, the Coronation of Charles and Camilla was a grand display of tradition, culture, and modernity, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the British monarchy in a time where their relevance is experiencing ongoing scrutiny.
