TV Show Review: “Invincible”

Zachary Nicholas, Editor-in-Chief

Adding to an already impressive year of animated media, “Invincible” is an incredible TV show start to finish. Robert Kirkman, one of the co-creators of “The Walking Dead”, provided his writing expertise for the TV adaptation of the comic series. With a talented writer in the driver’s seat, it’s no wonder this show is a home run. Let’s dive into why this show is so good.

The Voices Behind the Characters

For starters, the voice acting cast is nothing short of amazing. Notable names includeSandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Andrew Rannels, Zachary Quinto, Mahersala Ali, Justin Roiland, Clancy Brown, and Ross Marquand. However, two actors really require recognition. Those of course being Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons as Invincible and Omni-Man. They are the heart and soul of this story, and each scene between them is phenomenal.

A Different Comic Book Story

This show and story is not like others. It makes you believe it will be every other superhero show. A good guy balancing his personal life and his superhero life is nothing new. However, this show throws a major curveball in the first episode. Furthermore, “Invincible” is much more gory and violent than most shows.

Animation That Works

Zachary Nicholas

One of the major complaints of this show is that the animation is inconsistent. And while I do agree that this statement is in some ways true, I think this does not necessarily have to be a negative. For starters, animated shows always have scenes that do not flow very smoothly due to budget issues. But in this show, which involves blood and gore, occasional subpar animation adds to the unorthodox story. This is not your typical superhero series. As the story throws the viewer off the rails, the animation and visual medium does as well.

Verdict

With amazing voices in the recording studio and a spectacular and thrilling story, “Invincible” is one of the best shows of the year, and is a great watch for superhero fans and abroad.
