Videogame Review: ‘Spider Man: Miles Morales’

River Johnson, Senior Staff Writer

After the phenomenal Marvel’s Spiderman in 2018 for the PS4, Miles Morales had tons of excitement to live up to, and the game certainly delivered.

Gameplay

First up, gameplay. Miles Morales takes place one year after the first game, so Miles has only been Spiderman for one year at this point. As a result, Miles is comparatively much less trained and skilled as a superhero than Peter Parker, which in turn offers different animations and skill sets, while still keeping very similar mechanics to the game in 2018. Similarly to the 2018 game, a skill tree is present in which players can upgrade to use different moves and attacks on enemies. This provides a wide variety of combos and tricks that makes the game extra fun and immersive.

A Surprising Story

A major part of what made 2018’s Spiderman widely renowned was the compelling and thrilling story campaign. To my surprise, Miles Morales offers a very similar experience. The story of the game is very compelling and thrilling, and dives heavily into themes of family, community, and trust. It also uses well developed characters to convey a marvelous journey. Although Miles Morales’ story campaign is indeed a great tale, it simply is not as great in comparison to Spiderman’s adventure in 2018.

Removal of Mediocre Content

Something from the 2018 game was removed from Miles Morales, to the cheers of fans everywhere: no more puzzles and boring stealth missions. On top of getting rid of some of the filler or less entertaining content from the first game, Miles Morales offers a lot more depth and quality to side missions. Unlike the first game, Miles Morales’s archives show the “New Spiderman’s” journey in connecting with the people in Harlem, growing close, and becoming emotionally attached to the community.

Verdict

Overall, Spiderman: Miles Morales for the PS4 or the PS5 is a great game overall and an excellent second installment to the Marvel’s Spiderman Series. The new and satisfying gameplay, compelling adventure of a story, and the removal of unneeded aspects combined together form a game definitely worth playing.
