Winterguard Makes Showing at Super Bowl Half-Time Show
Bringing in a stunning 111.9 million viewers, this year’s Super Bowl was certainly full of twists. However something that people may not have noticed was a little gem within the half-time performance.
As usual, Lady Gaga wowed with her incredible music and dance routine, but there was something special about her backup dancers in this show. For those who are true Colorguard fans, they would have recognized members of Cypress Independent World Colorguard dancing on stage with Lady Gaga.
“It was so cool to see them spinning rifles on stage- I just realized, that’s a color guard up there with Lady Gaga!” said Paris Burke (‘18).
The guard was informed, only one month before the performance, of their opportunity to perform. The team worked tirelessly to write their own choreography and they even called in older members who hadn’t performed for years.
They were called with the task of representing the sport of Color Guard in front of 111.9 million Americans.
“It was really kind of inspirational to see people from a winterguard like ours up on stage, like if we continue with this activity outside of high school- that could be us!” said Sheree Bishop (‘19).
All of their rehearsals up to practice run took place over a private facebook group, because of the frequency of changes from the Lady Gaga’s creative team, yet the performance was still a raging success.
Cypress Independent was honored to share what they activity is all about.
“There are still so many people who don’t even know what colorguard is, and with the number of people watching the super bowl- I like to think that there are those who saw their performance and we like ‘Hey! What’s that?’ and decide to learn a little bit more about colorguard” said Sarah Yoon (‘20).
